As with many travelers to Italy, Rome was our first stop. There are numerous flights into Rome from other countries, often direct. The Rome Termini (central train station) is a central hub for rail options to the rest of the country which makes the city an easy jumping off point to other regions. Rome is an eclectic blend of all twenty of the regions of Italy – food, culture and history all come together in this city. It is an ideal city as either your first or last stop (or both) on a tour of Italy.
Our accommodations were near Fontana di Trevi which is situated near the Barberini metro station. This location is fairly central to most of the “must see” in the city with relatively short walks to many of the major sites. Rome is rich with history – the city is literally layer upon layer of times passed. From the Colosseum to the Pantheon, Palatine Hill, Spanish Steps, numerous catacombs and Vatican City, there’s so much to see and do here. Navigating the city is pretty easy with several options including an extensive metro system, an abundance of taxis and also street cars. Uber is also available here, however not as popular as in the U.S. Overall, the city is very walk-able which is mostly what we did. You’ll never be disappointed with a stroll through Rome – there is always an interesting piazza or historical site and plenty of great places to stop for a gelato or aperitivo.
Overall, our time in Rome was amazing. It was the perfect setup for our upcoming adventures in the Campania and Tuscany regions of Italy. From here, we are off to Sorrento by train.
