From Rome, we took a short train ride to Naples. The rail system in Italy is very efficient and the travel experience is pleasant. The express train travels at 300kmh (185mph) with limited stops, so our travel time was a little over an hour. Once we arrived at the Napoli Centrale (Naples Train Station) we were greeted by our bus transport to Sorrento which was our home-base while visiting Campania.
The Campania region of Italy is stunning. The coastal towns are adorned with colorful buildings built into the sides of breathtaking cliffs. The region is also well-known for its favorable climate and very fertile land given the proximity to Vesuvius.
Our hotel in Sorrento was fabulous. The rooms were extremely spacious and decorated perfectly. We were located just one block from the Bay of Naples and very near the main shopping and dining in the town. The food here is excellent with the fresh ingredients primarily focusing on seafood. Of course, pizza is a staple and available everywhere. While in Sorrento, we visited a local farm for a cooking class where we learned how to make several different kinds of cheeses and wood-fired pizzas.
Our location in Sorrento was the perfect jumping off point to many of the other well-known destinations along the Amalfi Coast. From here, we’ll visit Positano, Amalfi and Capri before stopping off in Pompeii on our way up to Tuscany.
