Capri, Italy

The Italians pronounce this island’s name as CAP-ree. It’s an easy ferry ride from Sorrento, taking just under 30 minutes. The ferry was filled with workers heading to their retail gigs and anxious honeymooners waiting for their taste of the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Whether a local or a visitor, the excitement to be heading to one of the most beautiful islands on Earth was just the same.

Except by helicopter, the only way on or off the island is by boat and the main port is Marina Grande which is the island’s main population center – coming in at less than 7,500 people. From the marina area, we head up the mountain by way of a funicular which is a small train that runs straight up and down the hillside. At the top, the town’s iconic Piazza Umberto is waiting with several restaurants and shops. There are very few cars on the island and they are forbidden on most of the streets and alleys, however electric carts are used abundantly to manage commercial deliveries to the island’s businesses. Our morning was easy-going with time to do some shopping at the island’s many high-end retail stores. We also had the chance to soak in the beautiful gardens and vistas overlooking the Mediterranean. Most notably, the view from the Gardens of Augustus onto the Faraglioni was stunning. These are the iconic rock formations jutting out from the deep blue waters surrounding the island. While we didn’t have the chance to participate in Capri’s nightlife, we did stop for a photo outside the famous Taverna Anema e Core which is the place to be after dark on Capri.

After lunch, we took a private boat for a tour around the island to see the Faraglioni and Blue Grotto up close. The waters off the coast of Capri are filled with yachts – many of the world’s wealthiest people come here to vacation and enjoy the natural beauty, perfect weather and crystal clear, deep-blue waters surrounding the island.

After our swim in the Mediterranean, our boat tour wrapped up back at Marina Grande where we got back on the ferry to Sorrento, overflowing with the joy of the day’s experiences. This was a day that will be hard to forget. Tomorrow morning, we head to Pompeii before jumping on the express train to Tuscany.
